Summer in Florence - Italian Language and Culture On Location


The ESOL and Foreign Languages Department, in cooperation with the Istituto Italiano, invites students and staff to a three-week on location program to study the Italian language and culture in Florence, Italy. Participants will go out of the classroom into the city to speak the language, interact with Italian people and experience the authenticity of Italian culture. This unique and affordable opportunity is open to everyone. There are no foreign language prerequisites.

Classes will be held at the Istituto Italiano in downtwon Florence. Officially recognized by the Italian Ministry of Public Education, it is located in a magnificent XVII century building, the elegant Palazzo Testa, in one of the most beautiful streets in the heart of the city, Via Martelli. The windows of the Institute offer an amazing close-up view of the Cathedral and the majestic Palazzo Medici-Riccardi. All the instructors are graduates of the University of Florence. The Institute's teaching method is based on the directives of the Modern Languages Project of the Council of Europe

Dates: July 2 – July 21, 2007

Cost: $ 3,360 includes tuition, airfare, lodging with an Italian family, breakfast daily, excursions to Venice and Rome, housing for instructor, entrance to museums and miscellanea. (Prices are based on the exchange rate of  Euro 1 = USD 1.33 as of March 18, 2007. Cost is subject to minor changes due to airline availability and rates, fuel price fluctuations and the Euro exchange rate.)

Participants in this program must register in ITA 221 – Italian Culture On Location (3 hrs., credit or audit, no prerequisites) in the Summer Term II, 2007. An additional 3 credits are available through credit by exam on return from Italy. The option of adding a dinner daily is available for an extra $240. Medical insurance coverage valid in Italy for the duration of the program is required. The application deadline is April 20, 2007. A deposit of $700 for airline and room reservations is required with application.
