Quotes That Inspire

This week's inspiring quote selection comes to us from Associate Vice President Terry Keys who leads Instructional Services.

"I'm a huge Tolkien fan, and I find the following quotes from the Fellowship of the Ring are very appropriate for our times," Terry acknowledges.

"I wish it need not have happened in my time," said Frodo.

"So do I," said Gandalf, "and so do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us."

"The world is indeed full of peril, and in it there are many dark places; but still there is much that is fair, and though in all lands love is now mingled with grief, it grows perhaps the greater." ― J.R.R. Tolkien, The Fellowship of the Ring

Terry says, "They both speak to me about the challenging times we are living in right now. We can't always choose the situations we are in, but how we deal with them is the important part. I see everyone at MCC doing their best in these troubled times. I also see many acts of kindness and empathy in these trying times. We can be stronger when this is over."

I concur, Terry. None of us would choose to live in these turbulent times, but never the less, here we are. How we respond is within our control. Kindness, caring, thoughtfulness, honesty, respect, and--as Tolkien reminds us--love are values that endure and sustain us through the darkest of times.

As these uncertain times may cause anxiety, strive to hold fast to these enduring values. Also strive to enjoy the warm temperatures and sunshine this holiday weekend. Laugh with those you care about; smile as you witness the beauty of our natural world in full bloom.

We hope to see you online at today's Town Hall at noon.

Is there a quote that motivates you? If so, submit it along with a brief narrative about why the quote resonates for you to PresOffice@monroecc.edu. "Quotes That Inspire" are featured on Fridays in the MCC Daily Tribune.
