STEP students place 9th at the First Lego League Tournament

On Saturday, November 21st, one of the STEP Middle School Robotics Team competed in the First Lego League (FLL) tournament in Buffalo, New York.  Their challenge was to identify a problem with the way trash is handled, design an innovative solution, and share their solution.   The FLL challenge was the Trash Tek project.  Students had to create a field with different trash sections, and through the use of a robot, collect the trash and dispose of the trash appropriately.

With only three weeks of working on the project every day after school, the STEP students were able to successfully complete the challenge and receive 9th place at the tournament.  You can imagine the excitement of the students as they received their award.  We are very proud of them!

The STEP Robotics coaches are Jon Laos, a MCC CSTEP alumni currently at RIT (Engineering) and William Adansi (MCC student-Engineering).  Mr. Cubuk (Physics Teacher) also assisted the STEP Robotics Team and took the team to the competition.  The STEP Advisor, Nicole Tatum, provided oversight.

The Science and Technology Entry Program (STEP) at MCC is an academic enrichment program.  It utilizes a push-in model that provides services and support at the middle and high schools.  Currently, the MCC STEP is located at the Rochester Academy Charter Middle and High Schools.  STEP will be expanding to the Gates-Chili Middle and High Schools and the Rochester Early College International High School.  STEP is funded by a legislative grant through the NYS Education Department.
