Spring 2015 TRS Faculty Presentations about Course Redesigns

·         Integrated Reading and Writing: Why? What? How?

o   On February 27, 2015, Judi Salsburg Taylor & Renee Dimino co-presented with Dr. David Caverly from Texas State University at the National Association of Developmental Education (NADE) Conference in Greenville, South Carolina.  The three explored why Integrated Reading and Writing (IRW) is the pedagogy of the present, what literature is foundational to IRW course design, and how to implement and revise IRW courses.  Participants left with “big picture” concepts of IRW and real classroom activities.

·         Moving the Needle from Theory to Practice

o   On March 13, 2015, Diane Clements, Rich Duff, Meghan Glaser, and Lisa Metzger presented at the third annual meeting of the College Reading and Learning Association Northeast Chapter (CRLA-NE) in Fitchburg, Massachusetts.  The four discussed how this two-year research project has fundamentally changed what they do in their classrooms and shared a variety of approaches faculty can utilize in their own IRW classes.

·         After the Redesign:  Flexible Pace 200

o   On Friday, April 17, 2015, Dave Boni, Amy Burns, Gena Merliss, and Marcia Fugate presented at the New York State Mathematics Association of Two-Year Colleges (NYSMATYC) Conference in Rochester, New York.  The four examined the question, how do we behave to help students accelerate and persevere?  Participants learned about MCC’s Flexible Pace developmental math program redesign, which is based on the Emporium Model, and how even after the basic framework is in place, we continue to refine by exploring new ways to help students succeed.

·         Reaching 21st Century Students: Integrated Reading and Writing

o   On Sunday, April 19, 2015, Renee Dimino and Judi Salsburg Taylor presented at the New York College Learning Skills Association (NYCLSA) Conference in Briarcliff Manor, New York.  The two shared an overview of MCC’s shift to Integrated Reading and Writing, including key elements that comprise the theory and practice of teaching IRW at MCC.  Participants engaged in an active workshop that provided materials they could implement immediately into their own IRW classes.

·         Introduction to Teaching REA 100

o   On Monday, April 13, 2015, Diane Clements and Terry Shamblin presented to 32 of their MCC Colleagues at an in-house workshop designed to prepare faculty for the new REA 100 pre-/co-requisite requirement.   The two suggested classroom activities faculty can do to meet the course learning outcomes, discussed the offerings for fall, and provided materials.

o   Two follow-up workshops are planned:  Rochelle Watson and Meghan Glaser will discuss reading in specific disciplines on May 20, 2015, and Matt Fox and Renee Dimino will facilitate reading-based curriculum planning on June 3, 2015.

Please join me in congratulating these faculty members for their years of hard work redesigning courses as well as for their willingness to share their time, talent, and materials with colleagues to enhance student success.
