Tech Savvy Inspires MCC Upward Bound and Liberty Partnerships Program Women

Our young ladies learned to put genes together in a chromosome-matching exercise, develop software code, market newly designed products, and more during Tech Savvy. An all-day experience at the University of Buffalo, Tech Savvy offered girls the chance to explore their potential STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Math) interests in over 20 hands-on workshops. The American Association of University Women (AAUW) Buffalo Chapter organized the event, and 35 girls from Upward Bound, Liberty Partnerships Programs attended. Thanks to the Xerox STEM Grant Committee, we received a grant from the Special Initiatives and Faculty Projects division that allowed us to empower our girls. Upward Bound director Carmelita Brown stated: “The day was spent supporting and encouraging our ladies in areas necessary for the development of knowledge and skills for the STEM workforce of the future.”

Senior Jyare Carter appreciated one speaker’s story of dealing with stereotypes as an African–American woman pursuing a physics degree: “Even though she got into Yale and other top schools, she still faced negative assumptions because she was a woman. She told us how she dealt with and overcame these stereotypes, and now she has her PhD!” Another student, freshman Alyssa Schwartz, benefitted from a workshop on budgeting: “We played a Jeopardy game that taught us how to manage an income of $47,000 per year, and it gave me a great sense of how to deal with many different expenses when I’m older.” We love seeing our students inspired and equipped to realize their potential, and we’re grateful to the MCC STEM Grant Committee for this opportunity!
