Professor Emeritus Robert A. Gullo, Mathematics

The MCC family mourns the sudden passing of founding MCC faculty member and Professor Emeritus of Mathematics Robert A. "Bob" Gullo on November 6, 2021 at the age of 85.

Professor Emeritus Gullo is survived by his wife Jackie, sons Robert II, Christopher, Stephen (Paula) and daughter Susan; six grandchildren; two brothers and many friends, cousins, nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends tomorrow, November 18 from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Miller Funeral & Cremation Services, Inc., 3325 S. Winton Road, Rochester. There will be a funeral mass at 9:30 a.m. on Friday, November 19 at St. Louis Church, 64 S. Main St., Pittsford.

According to his obituary, Professor Emeritus Gullo enjoyed spending time with his family and was a loving, devoted and dedicated husband. The couple recently celebrated their 58th wedding anniversary.

A native Rochesterian, Professor Emeritus Gullo graduated from Aquinas Institute. He earned bachelor of mathematics and educational psychology degrees from St. John Fisher College and his master of mathematics degree and doctorate of education degree from the University of Rochester.

Professor Emeritus Gullo taught mathematics at the University of Rochester while earning his doctorate. In 1962, he joined MCC’s Mathematics Department as an assistant professor and founding faculty member. He attended the first-ever meeting of MCC faculty members and helped the College welcome its first class in September 1962. He considered his fellow founding faculty members as family.

Professor Emeritus Gullo was promoted to associate professor and full professor in 1966 and 1971, respectively. His MCC career spanned over 33 years. MCC Trustees bestowed on him the title of professor emeritus in 1995 for his dedicated service to students and his many contributions to the development of MCC.

On a congratulatory letter to Professor Emeritus Gullo, President Emeritus Dr. Peter Spina wrote, “You were one of the first and one of the best at MCC!”

Professor Emeritus Gullo was an avid train enthusiast and owned the Whistle Stop Trains hobby shop in Irondequoit for many years. He was a long-time member of the Toy Train Collectors Society and enjoyed attending train meets and spending time working on his large self-built train layout in his home. He was also a devoted member of St. Louis Parish and sang in the choir. He loved jazz music and was an accomplished trumpet player.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.

We are grateful for Professor Emeritus Gullo’s inspiring and kind spirit and the many ways he helped established MCC as one of our community’s most trusted and valuable educational resources. He will be missed.
