Many students register for a full-time course load, thinking that is the only way they will be eligible for financial aid. As far as financial aid is concerned 12 is NOT the magic number. There are many financial aid opportunities for part time students.
PELL: student must file the FAFSA form. Students eligible for PELL can receive it regardless of the number of credits registered
Aid for Part Time Study (APTS): available for students taking 3-11 credits. Applications and instructions are on the MCC financial aid webpage, as well as in the offices of Financial Aid and Registration Financial Services.
Federal Work Study and Federal Direct Student Loan: student should be enrolled at least 6 credits. Applications are available online and in the offices of Financial Aid and Registration Financial Services
For all of the above programs, students need to be matriculated and meet satisfactory academic progress standards.
Keep these financial aid sources in mind as you are advising students. The financial aid process values academic quality. So students can focus on passing coursework and not stress out about their bill.
