Talking Turkey About Faculty Initiated Withdrawals #2

Talking Turkey About Faculty Initiated Withdrawals (FIWs)

Are there any questions?

Q: If you don’t like late faculty initiated withdrawals then why do you take them? Stop whining and just say no!

A: As with late student initiated withdrawals, there are often legitimate reasons why the faculty withdrawal could not be turned in on time. We are all professionals and I respect your reason for turning it in past the deadline. If I were to say no it would penalize the student more than it would penalize you.

Q. Got any detailed guidance?

A: All right, seriously. BEFORE the November 23 deadline, I would check my most recent class list on the 107 screen or the most recent attendance roster which I received. I would pretend this is my grade roster and see who I wish I had withdrawn rather than now being forced to give an “F”. I would fill out a faculty initiated withdrawal for these students and turn it in… when?

Q: Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. November 23. In other words, we shouldn’t wait until we are ready to grade to realize there is someone in our class who we haven’t seen and who we now wish we had withdrawn. I get it.

A: Good! Start filling out those withdrawal forms and get them in by Wednesday, November 23!

Q: Wait! I have a few more questions for you.

A: We’ll deal with those tomorrow.
