Lake Ontario Shipwreck Lecture Tomorrow

The Leroy V. Good Library (Brighton campus) will be hosting a lecture tomorrow, Wednesday, February 25, 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm. Jim Kennard , shipwreck enthusiast, will speak on “The Milan: Discovery of an Early 19th Century Lake Ontario Schooner.” The lecture will be located on the 4th floor of the library, outside of room 2-452.

Jim Kennard and his diving partner, Dan Scoville, made their discovery of the schooner off the southern shore of Lake Ontario near Oak Orchard/Point Breeze, New York, in the summer of 2005. They were unable to begin their exploration until the summer of 2006, however, due to the depth of the remains, well beyond the 135-foot limit for recreational scuba divers. Come hear how the two explorers solved their obstacle through the creation of a remotely operated vehicle outfitted with multiple cameras and high-intensity lights. If there is time, Mr. Kennard will also be addressing the preliminary findings from his and Mr. Scoville’s 2008 discovery of a rare dagger-board schooner in Lake Ontario, the only dagger-board schooner to have been found in the Great Lakes.
