MCC-JPMorgan Chase Collaboration Captures Media Attention

On June 12, the Rochester Business Journal and WXXI News reported on MCC’s collaboration with JPMorgan Chase to bolster advanced manufacturing training programs and to create a pipeline of skilled workers for the growing manufacturing sector. As part of JPMorgan Chase’s New Skills at Work initiative, MCC was awarded a $320,000 grant to create two programs and expand our labor market intelligence efforts. Todd Oldham, vice president of Economic Development and Innovative Workforce Services, was interviewed by both media outlets. The RBJ also quoted Lou Romano, president of Romold Inc. and a member of the MCC Precision Machining Advisory Board, and MCC alumnus Matthew Brooks, who started at Romold seven years ago as an apprentice and is now a tool room supervisor.

A portion of the grant award will go toward developing a middle-skill bridge program, aimed at ensuring participants are academically prepared prior to their enrollment in one of MCC’s accelerated certificate programs, including a planned accelerated certificate in mechatronics to be launched in fall 2016.

The grant will also be used to expand MCC’s labor market intelligence efforts. Among its initiatives is the creation of a one-stop online resource designed to serve anyone in the community seeking accurate and timely data-driven information on middle-skill occupations within the Finger Lakes region. The website will promote regional planning targeted at closing the middle-skill gaps in the workforce as well as create a strategic framework for addressing the gaps, such as providing educational requirements for specific careers.
