Samite: The Soul of Africa

Mark your calendars for an exciting international event! The MCC Global Interest Group presents an evening of African music and storytelling by Samite, accompanied by percussionists Mar Gueye and Jeff Haynes, on Friday, April 25, 2008, from 6-8 PM in the MCC Theatre.

Samite ( "https://www.samite.com/" ), born and raised in Uganda, learned to play traditional African flute from his grandfather and became one of East Africa’s most acclaimed flutists. He continued his musical career in Kenya after fleeing Uganda as a political refugee in 1982, and in the United States after immigrating in 1987, singing original and traditional songs in his mother tongue, Luganda, while playing on the kalimba (finger-piano), marimba (wooden xylophone), litungu (seven-stringed Kenyan instrument), and various flutes. Several of his US performances have been broadcast nationally.

In addition to having founded Musicians for World Harmony ("https://www.musiciansforworldharmony.org/"), Samite is a photographer and anti-AIDS activist. The week before the performance, examples of his photography will be displayed in the showcases in the Building 12 main hallway on the first and second floors, and MCC students will mount a display of African and African-inspired art in the North Atrium outside the Mercer Gallery.

The event is free and open to the public (parking is available in Lot F). Light Ethiopian refreshments and coffee will be served in the North Atrium after the performance.
