MCC Open House Enthralls Upward Bound Students

Ever wondered what it’s like to be in an operating room standing over a patient about to receive surgery? Karett, a freshman student at Wilson High School, now knows that experience after attending the Monroe Community College Open House. Karett, along with thirteen other Upward Bound students, woke up early on Saturday, October 15th to attend the Open House and discover all MCC has to offer, from its Surgical Technology program to its Liberal Arts and Business classes.

The day began with a riveting speech from MCC President Anne Kress that highlighted MCC’s quality, affordability, and connections to local employment and transfer schools. Then the students split into breakout sessions, depending on their desired major or career path. They heard professors share their expertise on particular fields of study, the requirements to get into those fields, and what the students should be doing in high school to prepare for MCC. “I want to be a chef, and checking out MCC’s culinary program was fantastic,” noted Northeast College Prep freshman Abraham. “The kitchen classroom was fully stocked and well organized, and it seemed like the program would prepare me really well for a cooking career.”

The trip ended with a tour of the residence halls on campus, giving students a first-hand opportunity to visualize living on campus. They peered into fully-equipped kitchens and spacious living rooms, and learned about the residence lif programming that provides students with alternative fun events to stereotypical college partying. They also heard Resident Advisors share how residence hall living gives the students an opportunity to grow in maturity, as students must learn how to share a space with others, communicate with their roommates, and look out for the safety of their building.

We enjoyed a great day of students visualizing a college experience at MCC, and are excited for students to apply!
