Dancing on the Glass Ceiling: Women and Leadership in E-Learning

Women in distance and online learning have made great professional progress at all levels, but there are still gender-related issues that need to be addressed. Please join us as Educational Technology Services hosts a webinar entitled “Dancing on the Glass Ceiling: Women and Leadership in E-Learning” on Thursday, October 18, 2007 from 1:00 p.m.– 2:15 p.m. in room 3-116 on the Brighton Campus.  The presenter is Dr. Darcy W. Hardy, Assistant Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and Executive Director of the University of Texas System TeleCampus. Her session will focus largely upon the often-discussed concept of the “glass ceiling,” and particularly on chapters from the book, Dancing on the Glass Ceiling: Women, Leadership and Technology, co-edited by Don Olcott, Jr. and Dr. Darcy W. Hardy.

While the session will address some of the research related to the glass ceiling concept, the majority of the time will focus on real experiences that are intangible and often discounted. Many times it is the real experience that fosters mentoring relationships, which by all accounts are key to breaking through the ceiling– and dancing once you get there.

Women and men involved in distance and online learning, regardless of level of position or expertise, will benefit from this important seminar. The session would be particularly useful for women who are working toward leadership positions, and for men who want to learn more about how to help them succeed.

By participating in this seminar, you will:

• Recognize the concept of the glass ceiling in the fields of distance and online learning
• Understand some of the historical background and cultural importance of women in the workplace
• Use the technology revolution to positively impact leadership opportunities
• Develop mentoring relationships with men and women who will help you be successful (or show you how to be a better mentor)

• Learn from the experiences of other successful women in the field
• Make your own plan to break through the ceiling, or help someone else do the same
