President's Wednesday Message

Can the purpose of MCC be captured in 54 words? According to our mission statement, the answer is “yes.”

Monroe Community College is a dynamic learning community where access, excellence, and leadership are the College’s hallmarks. Our mission is to educate and prepare diverse learners to achieve scholarly, professional, and individual success within a local and global context. The College serves as a catalyst for innovation, economic development, lifelong learning, and civic engagement.

An ideal mission statement
  • conveys what your organization does,
  • captures your organization’s value in inspiring yet realistic and specific ways,
  • is brief enough to be remembered, and
  • reflects your organization’s goals.

How does MCC’s mission statement stack up? Well, three out of four isn’t bad.

I confess, it is highly unlikely that many (or any) of us can recite our mission statement from memory. (Maybe the next version could be shorter.) Yet, part of what drives its length is the powerful purpose it holds. Our mission is transformative, and we see its impact all around us. It drives MCC’s decision-making, shaping how we recruit students, faculty, and staff; how we design and deliver programs and curriculum; how we build initiatives and community partnerships; how we allocate resources. In big ways and small, every single day, we live our mission.

So, it would be a good to see this statement more often, reminding us who we are and why we’re here. Going forward, you will start finding the mission statement on College documents, like the agendas for the Board of Trustees, Faculty Senate, and President’s Staff. We will also be adding it to our job descriptions.

Learning-Access-Excellence-Leadership-Education-Preparation-Diversity-Scholars-Success-Innovation-Professions-Economic Development-Engagement: it adds up to an impressive mission. Thank you for assuring we fulfill this promise!

As you look around MCC, where do you see our mission in practice? Share your thoughts and examples on my blog.
