TCC: UR-Designation at MCC

Do you want to increase your students’ engagement with discipline-specific material in any of your classes? Are you already employing project-based learning that introduces students to real-world applications of your discipline? If so, please join the TCC and URSICA for a remote College-hour workshop on Friday, April 1, from 12-12:50 PM, to explore the possibilities of UR-designation!

RSVP to Maria Brandt at mbrandt@monroecc.edu by March 25

The UR-designation identifies courses that incorporate Undergraduate Research, Scholarly Inquiry, and/or Creative Activity (URSICA) by providing an active, inquiry-based learning environment and by emphasizing the language and processes of research and/or creative activity in the classroom. The purpose of a UR-designation is to promote a culture in which students are encouraged to explore, enter, and advance dialogues in academic disciplines and their related professional fields. UR-designated courses offer students preparation for transfer and the workforce, experience in scholarly pursuit, improved critical-thinking and writing skills, opportunities for hands-on learning, and opportunities to use cutting-edge technologies and methods. They also promote greater equity in the classroom and across MCC. For faculty, UR-designated courses offer increased student engagement, professional-development opportunities, opportunities for program-level marketing, new inspiration in teaching, new motivation for personal research and creative activity, and higher levels of student retention and success.

During this workshop, participants will walk through a collaborative, hands-on workshop with the goal of emerging ready to apply for an actual UR-designation.

Although we’ll welcome last-minute attendees, we’d love to hear from you ahead of time. If possible, please contact Maria Brandt before Friday, March 25, with any questions and/or to RSVP. To prepare for the workshop itself, please read the attached UR-Designation Process and Guidelines and bring your current CIS and at least one applicable assignment.
