Financial Aid Quick Tips -- Lesson 1: The PIN Is Important

Just as students are adjusting to this semester, we ask them to start preparing for the next.  Students using financial aid are starting their 2004-2005 process now.  You can help them by encouraging them to use their Personal Identification Number (PIN).

The PIN is a four digit code assigned by the federal government.  It serves as an identifier to let students access their personal information in various U.S. Department of Education systems. It's like the personal identification number from a bank. With this PIN a student can:

§       Electronically sign the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
§       Review and correct processed FAFSA information
§       Electronically sign a student loan promissory note
§       Reapply for financial aid, and
§       Conduct other important business directly with the us department of education.

As you are interacting with and advising your students, remind them to start their financial aid process as well.   Students can get ready for next semester by digging out their 2003 tax information and federal PIN.  If they do not know their PIN, direct them to the PIN website at HYPERLINK "https://www.pin.ed.gov" www.pin.ed.gov .
