MCC Mentioned in Article on Growing Interest in Allied Health Care Programs

MCC was among the area's education providers highlighted in the Rochester Business Journal's Oct. 30 special report on health care education. Other institutions quoted in the article were Rochester Regional Health and SUNY Brockport.

Margaret Kaminsky, dean of STEM and Health, and Marcia Lynch, Ed.D., director of health care programs focusing on certified nurse assistants (CNA) and home health aides (HHA), were interviewed for the article "Schools report uptick in interest in health care programs amid pandemic."

"Health care workers were already in need pre-COVID-19, especially in rural counties," Dr. Lynch says. "Now they are even more essential to the workforce."

Key points from the interview:

  • Nursing, clinical laboratory technician, radiologic technology and surgical technology programs continue to see demand in terms of student enrollment.
  • Enrollment in the health studies program increased 6% from fall 2019 to fall 2020.
  • MCC's allied health care programs tend to draw a number of nontraditional students, whose average age is 27.
  • A number of students in these disciplines have secured employment before graduation.
  • A licensed practical nurse program is being developed.
  • Students in CNA and HHA fields often receive financial support, including from local employers in the health care field, to help offset tuition costs. And in some cases, students also receive a wage for attending the class.
  • MCC receives support from local organizations, such as Action for a Better Community Inc., as well as Monroe County to help meet the growing demand for health care workers. Through MPower Healthcare -- a partnership involving Monroe County and MCC -- education/training is provided at no cost to Monroe County residents seeking employment to fill essential health and medical positions.
