MCC Visiting Scholar Series Presents Author, Global Activist Rye Barcott


WHAT: MCC welcomes Rye Barcott, author of It Happened on the Way to War: A Marine’s Path to Peaceto share his story and message on global citizenship.

WHERE: Warshof Conference Center in the R. Thomas Flynn Campus Center

WHEN: 9 a.m., Friday, Oct. 14

DETAILS: In 2000 Barcott, a 20-year-old college student, spent part of the summer living in the slum shacks of Nairobi, Kenya. Barcott, who would soon be joining the U.S. Marine Corps, wanted to better understand ethnic violence. He learned Swahili and listened to young people talk about survival. He forged friendships with a widowed nurse and a tough community organizer and together they founded a nongovernmental organization committed to health and participatory development. That organization, Carolina for Kibera, has been globally recognized as a pioneer in empowering youth. Barcott was named a Person of the Year by ABC World News in 2006 and a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum in 2011.
