MCC UB Students Ongoing Volunteering Amidst COVID

While participating in MCC Upward Bound (UB), high school students get opportunities to participate in community service.  On multiple dates in October, several UB participants, alongside Ms. Alice, volunteered for Seneca Park Zoo’s ZooBoo Spooktacular, helping hand out candy or leading activities in front of the zoo. Sitey, a Wilson junior, liked helping putting the fun packs together.  “It was a great environment; I enjoyed being able to experience interacting with people.”

On Wednesday, November 4, UB hosted its first Hybrid Day of Volunteering. Mrs. Fabretti accompanied a group of students at Foodlink. Kasim, a senior at World of Inquiry School No. 58, said he “enjoyed the simplicity of it as well as being able to see friends I haven’t seen in a while due to COVID.”  Meanwhile, Ms. Melea, Ms. Brown, and Ms. Alice led a virtual Showing Appreciation Workshop over Zoom. Students spent the day creating Thank You eCards for family, friends, UB staff, and essential workers. The students enjoyed the workshop greatly. “I liked everything about it. It overall was just an extremely fun workshop,” said Zahyra, a senior at Rochester Early College International High School.

For a few hours on December 2, UB’s Ms. Alice and Sitey volunteered at the Tops in Gates ringing bells for the Red Kettle Campaign. Sitey shared, “I enjoyed putting a smile on people’s faces every time we greeted them.”

MCC Upward Bound takes pride in ensuring that students know the importance of giving to their community, even during a pandemic.
