TV Reporter Interviews Honor Society Chapter President

News 8/FOX reporter Ali Touhey recently interviewed Erik Olsson, chapter president of Phi Theta Kappa, about the MCC organization’s involvement in the Rochester City School District’s I’M READY program.

Middle and high school students who are serving long-term suspension are assigned to this alternative learning program, where they receive personalized academic support and other services necessary to make a successful return to their home school. This year, MCC honor society members are serving as mentors and tutors to these students.

In the TV interview, Erik explained how developing personal relationships with the students is just as important as teaching them math, science, social studies, and other subjects. The segment aired Friday, Nov. 19, during its 5 p.m. broadcast.

On a side note, the Phi Theta Kappa chapter is hosting a group of I’M READY students from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 1, at the Damon City Campus to introduce them to college life. Wancarlos Pabon-Sanchez, an MCC student who attended the I’M READY program, joins Dr. Topping and Dr. Otero as scheduled speakers. The program participants will also spend some time with SEGA President Antoine Reeves, Doorway to Success program adviser Charles Witherspoon, Honorable Women President Danielle Betts, and Women on the Move program adviser Trelawney McKnight.

At 10:15 a.m. in Room 4193, the Phi Theta Kappa chapter will present new school equipment to the students and teachers in the I’M READY program. Since September, the MCC students have held various fundraising events to purchase a digital recorder, an electronic music keyboard and other accessories for the program’s music room.
