Thiem Foundation Extends Giving to MCC Nursing Students, Others

The Alvin F. and Ruth K. Thiem Foundation has extended its support of Monroe Community College through a recent gift of $45,500 to Building on Success: The Campaign for Monroe Community College. Previous gifts made by the foundation—through the Monroe Community College Foundation—have been specifically targeted to the college’s nursing program. This most recent gift will continue to support student nurses and students pursuing other majors.

Richard F. O’Connor, Esq., president, Thiem Foundation, said that personally meeting and hearing from MCC students who benefited from last year’s gift persuaded foundation officers to consider doing more this year. “We were so pleased with the follow up from the college’s foundation, Nursing Department and students that we wanted to increase our giving to help more students,” said O’Connor. “When we came to campus to tour the nursing facilities and meet students and faculty we were very pleased to see the positive impact of our gift.”

The gift will impact MCC students in three ways: supporting the Thiem Nursing Scholar Loan Fund established at MCC in 2004, enabling the purchase of personal digital assistants (PDAs) for use in clinical-learning settings, and establishing a student loan/grant fund for non-nursing students.

The Thiems were longtime residents of Irondequoit, N.Y. and owners of an insurance business and the riding stables at Durand Eastman Park. The Thiem Foundation was established in 1992 to support educational, health care, religious and other initiatives.
