MCC Foundation Awards First Micro Grants

Over $3,500 in grants was awarded to the following MCC faculty and staff in order to take the MCC learning experience to the next level in 2017 - 2018.

Steadicam Video Stabilization - $800

Jeremy Case, Virtual Campus

Steadicam systems have been effectively used in high-end video and film productions for decades to smooth out moving footage, but have been very expensive. Recently, a more affordable option has become available. This new equipment will enable the collection of higher-quality footage for use both in the classroom and in communications to the community at large. Being able to collect this quality of footage without having to hire outside firms will save the College (and ultimately students) money.

CHE 124 Organic Chemistry Flashcards/ChemDraw Software - $852

Judith Mevs, Chemistry & Geosciences

This proposal aims to provide tools for students to review and identify basic functional groups, nomenclature, structural formulas, and chemical reactions of organic compounds covered in CHE 124 by creating sets of flashcards that would be made available in the Natural Sciences Education Center and MCC libraries. In addition, the use of ChemDraw Prime 17.0 chemical drawing software package will increase speed and efficiency for faculty in the design/process of creating flashcards, as well as other instructional or assessment materials for students.

Community Building - $900

Athesia Benjamin, Visual and Performing Arts

The goal of this proposal is to develop a more inclusive MCC community that will benefit all of us. Organized programs and events will provide opportunities for diverse interaction among students, and potentially faculty and staff, while also encouraging a community of consciousness of compassion and positivity. The funds will help to establish a SURJ (Showing Up for Racial Justice) chapter on campus, continue race forums, speed-meeting events in the campus center, utilizing the MCC Facebook page, showcasing pictures of students interacting in diverse groups, drop-in participation for murals, and starting a kindness club.

On-Site Homeland Security Course in Israel - $1,000

John J. Perrone Jr., Homeland Security

Israel is considered to have some of the best homeland security practices and policies of any place in the world. Students attending the Israel program will have the opportunity to hear directly from security members of the police forces and Israeli defense forces. They will see homeland security measures from the experts at sea ports, airports, shopping malls, government buildings and critical infrastructure and learn how they keep their country safe. Financial assistance will help to offset some of the cost of an additional day in Israel for meals, materials and travel escorts to allow the students a cultural and religious experience that is unparalleled and an opportunity of a lifetime.
