Tutoring and Academic Assistance Center (TAAC) Overview

The TAAC offers free tutoring for over 300 courses at MCC. Each member of the TAAC staff will complete rigorous training standards and best practices set by the College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA).

The TAAC aims to assist students in becoming independent learners, promoting critical thinking, and providing support from trained professionals. Students can work with tutoring staff to assess their academic needs and develop interventions for tackling challenges in particular courses.

These are our tutors:

  • Academic Coach: Assists students with developing effective reading and learning strategies to become self-regulated learners. The role of the coach is to help the student improve academically by identifying strengths and weaknesses and designing appropriate activities to improve their learning. They also help with goal setting, time management, note taking, and test taking.
  • Peer Tutor: Current MCC students who have mastered course content in a particular discipline. Peer tutors work with other students to help them develop effective learning strategies and to become self-regulated learners.
  • Professional Tutor: Assists students with discipline-specific content, while working with them to develop effective learning strategies.
  • Writing Consultant: Works with students to develop effective writing strategies and to become self-regulated learners.

TracCloud

Now featuring TracCloud, the new and improved version of TutorTrac. TracCloud is more user friendly as it makes scheduling and accessing appointments much easier for students seeking assistance.

TracCloud is a free online tutoring platform that allows students to schedule live sessions with MCC tutors during scheduled hours. This service provides one-on-one live support with content experts in MCC specific courses ranging from math, biology, English, business, psychology, and writing, among many other courses. Sessions are held within an interactive virtual classroom in which a student can video chat with an MCC tutor, screen share, and upload documents in real time.

TracCloud Login

ThinkingStorm

For additional tutoring after hours, ThinkingStorm is available 24 hours through our Brightspace Learning Management System. Once logged into Brightspace, click on “Academic Resources” in the Navbar, and then “ThinkingStorm-Online Tutoring”.

Monroe Community College students have access to free (up to 5 hours per year) online tutoring services with ThinkingStorm. This service provides convenient and comprehensive online support for topics like math, writing, science, statistics, and more. ThinkingStorm is open every day for online tutoring, which includes on-demand, appointment-based, and asynchronous support.

Students work one-on-one with their tutors in intuitive online classrooms, which combine user-friendly visual tools and live chat functionality to create a versatile, interactive learning environment. Students can receive help on tricky assignments, brush up on the basics, or tackle advanced concepts with help from a team of expert online tutors. Students can also access live tutorials in writing across math, business, writing, IT, and sciences, as well as a full range of study resources, including writing manuals, sample problems, research tools, and study skills manuals.

TRIO Student Support Services

TRIO Student Support Services (SSS) is a federally funded program sponsored by the United States Department of Education. The mission of TRIO Student Support Services at Monroe Community College is to increase the academic achievement, retention, and graduation rates of first-generation, low-income students, and students with disabilities. Our staff is committed to providing quality services and support the transformational experience of each program participant. SSS aims to increase student engagement, strengthen self-efficacy, and prepare students for becoming global citizens. The SSS program will encourage and assistant 300 students from traditionally underrepresented backgrounds.

Dental Clinic

Tutoring is provided in the Dental Clinic so that students have access to equipment that they will need to learn to use for the program.

Information and Computer Technologies Lab

Tutoring is provided in the Information and Computer Technologies Lab so students have access to equipment that they will need to learn to use for the program.

Health Information Technology Lab

Tutoring is provided in the Health Information Technology Lab so students have access to equipment that they will need to learn to use for the program.

Natural Science Education Center (NSEC)

 The Natural Science Education Center (NSEC) is located in Building 9 – 143. It is managed by the Collegiate Science and Technology Entry Program (CSTEP).  The CSTEP staff have offices located within NSEC.  Professional and peer tutors offer tutoring services in the science courses.  Tutoring sessions are offered individually or in group settings.  Tutoring sessions are offered on a walk-in basis, as long as the tutors are available. 

NSEC has resources that students can use while in NSEC, including anatomical models, microscopes, text books and much more.  To access NSEC, students must scan their student ID’s at the front desk.

Graphic Design Lab – VaPA Learning Center

Tutoring is provided for Graphic Art in our Macintosh Labs in Building 4, Rooms 101 and 103.

These labs contain Macintosh computers with Adobe Creative Cloud Suite, Microsoft Office, and a number of other programs applicable to VaPA students.
