ENG 224 - Literature of Horror

3 Credits

Students will read classic, modern, and contemporary short stories and novels, with an emphasis on the historical development of the genre. Attention will be given to supernatural, psychological, and allegorical themes and tropes in such fiction, as well as relevant social and historical background information. The course will center on written fiction, with occasional reference to horror in films and other media.

Prerequisite(s): English 101 with a C or better, or placement into English 200, or instructor permission.

1. Categorize horror texts in the context of the genre's own history.
2. Describe horror literature's subgenres and conventions.
3. Describe horror literature's relationship to culture, with attention to potential biases and limitations.
4. Analyze horror texts, identifying issues, developing logical arguments, and drawing conclusions.
5. Apply common horror literature themes to cultural intellectual history.
6. Apply the appropriate formal conventions when writing about literature.
7. Write a thesis-driven essay using primary and secondary sources.
