DEN 125 - Clinical Dental Hygiene II

4 Credits

The beginning level of clinical patient care utilizing primary level skills in patient histories, exams, patient education, treatment, planning, and record keeping. Students are required to recruit patients in order to meet clinical requirements.

Prerequisite: BIO 134 or BIO 142, and successful completion of all previous semesters DEN courses with a grade of C or better.

Course Learning Outcomes
1. Apply the principles of professional and ethical behavior during patient care.
2. Analyze essential patient data.
3. Develop a basic treatment plan for patients considering individual needs for various populations.
4. Provide dental hygiene services at acceptable proficiency levels.
5. Proceed through a patient appointment in an orderly fashion.
6. Demonstrate acceptable infection control measures.
7. Maintain dental instruments.
8. Document various dental patient services.
9. Manage common medical emergencies.
10. Describe the use and management of ultrasonic equipment.
11. Demonstrate self care techniques to patients.
12. Demonstrate various polishing techniques.
13. Describe the use of caries detection devices.
14. Describe the use of pain control methods.
15. Describe the care of the orthodontic client.
16. Describe the care of prosthetic appliances.
17. Describe various dental office emergency procedures.
