HMN 220 - Global Humanities I

4 Credits

Interdisciplinary study of a variety of significant works of literature, philosophy, history, art, and music from a global perspective. The course will chronologically or thematically survey works of regions (including but not limited to Europe, Asia, Africa, India, and the Americas) from prehistory to 1500 while emphasizing oral and written analysis of primary and secondary works.

Prerequisite(s): English 101 with a grade of C or better or English 200 with a grade of C or better.

Course Learning Outcomes
1. Analyze the literary, philosophical, historical, artistic, and musical works of diverse cultures throughout world history (prehistory to 1500) using field-appropriate terminology and various critical methodologies.
2. Compare and/or contrast the literary, philosophical, historical, artistic, and musical works of diverse cultures throughout world history (prehistory to 1500).
3. Discuss literary, philosophical, historical, artistic, and musical works as primary cultural expressions in the formation of the social and political structures and systems of various civilizations throughout world history (prehistory to 1500).
4. Apply the appropriate formal conventions when writing about the literary, philosophical, artistic, historical, and musical works of diverse cultures throughout history (prehistory to 1500).
5. Write a thesis-driven essay using primary sources (literary, philosophical, historical, artistic, and/or musical works) and secondary sources.
