NUR 212 - Maternal - Neonatal Nursing

4 Credits

NUR 212 focuses on the basic needs of maternal and neonatal patients, using the Nursing Process to provide quality, safe, patient centered care for diverse populations through teamwork and collaboration. Students use knowledge, science and evidence to manage maternal and neonatal considerations in the acute care setting. The core competencies of Associate Degree Nursing practice expanded upon in NUR 112 are applied to this patient population. This course has a required clinical component.

Prerequisites: NUR 112 with a minimum grade of C, BIO 145 with a minimum grade of C, PSY 212 and ENG 101; corequisites: NUR 210, BIO 202, SOC 101, unless previously taken.

Course Learning Outcomes
1. Demonstrate professional communication to collaborate with members of the interprofessional team.
2. Adapt therapeutic communication techniques to meet the needs of patients/significant support person(s) that honor diversity, equity and inclusion
3. Analyze health disparities that influence the health conditions of patients and families.
4. Apply clinical judgment and the Nursing Process to create an individualized plan of care using information literacy.
5. Manage nursing care utilizing principles of prioritization, for a postpartum patient and neonate.
6. Evaluate data to determine if assistance is required to meet patient safety needs.
7. Incorporate accountable behaviors when caring for patients and families consistent with professional nursing practice.
8. Demonstrate ethical reasoning according to the principles of the ANA Code of Ethics.
9. Use information literacy to analyze evidence-based resources for maternal and/or neonatal patients.
10. Apply current evidence-based standards of professional nursing to patient and family centered care.
