FPT 130 - Basic ARFF Class
This Basic Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting (ARFF) class is specifically designed to provide new airport firefighters with the basic skills and knowledge required to handle aircraft crashes and conduct fire suppression operations as they relate to rescue and fire extinguishment. Both hands-on use of the aircraft fire training simulators and classroom presentations will be provided to the students. The classroom presentation will provide familiarization of chemistry of fire, fire extinguishing agents, the Incident Management System (IMS), airport familiarization, aircraft types and familiarization, hazardous materials and cargo handling, and pre-incident planning/post incident operations. The skills application session will consist of conducting advanced rescue techniques, fire suppression operations in an aviation environment, application of firefighting foams on flammable liquids, and specialized apparatus and equipment operations. Forty class hours.
Course Learning Outcomes
1. Evaluate National Fire Protection Standards, Advisory Circulars, Certification Alerts, and manufacturer date to comply with FAA Part 139 requirements.
2. Apply movement area rules and regulations during apparatus operations to eliminate incursions.
3. Analyze individual airport operations for potential accident response and determine the resources necessary for incident mitigation.
4. Identify and locate the component locations of aircraft based at the assigned airport.
5. Explain the importance communication procedures have in determining a positive incident outcome.
6. Assess and aircraft emergency for exterior and interior life hazards to minimize risk to responders and passengers and determine the best method of access and egress for evacuation and rescue.
7. Select tools and equipment to suppress/extinguish fire, secure the aircraft, and control various aircraft emergencies from the inception to termination of an incident.
8. Identify a potential hazardous materials incident and initiate the local hazardous materials response plan while isolating the scene.
