HTL 105 - Hotel Operations

3 Credits

This course is designed to provide students with a comprehensive, fundamental understanding of how hotels are managed with respect to the rooms perspective (reservations, front desk, housekeeping, engineering, and security). Through computer simulation, property tours, and guest lecturers, students will be exposed to the operational positions and responsibilities of the different areas of the rooms division. Food and beverage, sales and marketing, and the accounting office will be addressed with respect to how each of these departments interact with the rooms division. Spring Semester only. Three class hours.

Course Learning Outcomes
1. Describe the basic requirements for a successful hotel
2. Distinguish between the different types of rooms in a hotel
3. Discuss Internet use for guest reservations and for promotional hotel purposes
4. Explain step-by-step what happens to a hotel reservation from its receipt to the guest's arrival
5. Describe the registration process and the rooming of the guest
6. Discuss security from the standpoint of guest luggage, hotel keys, and hotel telephones
7. Describe the accounting of the guest's stay, the direct billing process, the methods of payments, and precautions to take with each listed
8. Explain the function of the night auditor and describe the basic function of the housekeeping, engineering, and security departments
9. Discuss the impact that the food and beverage department has on the rooms division
10. List ways the rooms department accommodates the business booked by the sales and marketing department
