PLE 222 - Firearms Instructor Course

4 Credits

This course provides students with the knowledge and skills required to instruct police and peace officers in the use of firearms in law enforcement.
Prerequisite: Successful completion of the Basic Course for Police Officers or Basic Course for Peace Officers, and three years of experience in a police or peace officer position that requires carrying a firearm. Sworn "active" police or peace officer. DCJS General Topics certification.

Course Learning Outcomes
1. Explain and demonstrate the duties and responsibilities of a firearms instructor.
2. Explain and demonstrate the safety precautions that need to be adhered to during all firearms instruction.
3. Demonstrate firearms proficiency by attaining a score of 90% or higher on the New York State Municipal Police Training Council (MPTC) Qualifying Course of Fire as described in the Firearms Training unit of the current Basic Course for Police Officers.
4. Demonstrate the instructional techniques that are most effective during firearms instruction.
5. Demonstrate the fundamentals of marksmanship while performing firearms instructor duties.
6. Explain and demonstrate the steps associated with properly drawing a handgun from the holster.
7. Demonstrate and explain the various shooting positions utilizing cover and concealment principles.
8. Demonstrate recognition and remediation of shooting problems when performing firearms instructor duties.
9. Demonstrate and explain tactical considerations related to firearm deployment in the field.
10. Explain and demonstrate range procedures when performing firearms instructor duties.
11. Describe the various types of ammunition considerations related to firearms, rifles and shotguns.
12. Explain and demonstrate use of various types of holsters and ammunition carriers.
13. Explain the revolver, semi-automatic handgun and shotgun functioning and nomenclature.
14. Explain how critical incident trauma relates to law-enforcement.
15. Demonstrate supervision of semi-automatic firearms care and cleaning.
16. Explain use of force and how the penal law, federal legislation and policy outlines lawful deployment of deadly physical force.
17. Explain the concept of shooting course design.
18. Explain the legal issues associated with law enforcement use of firearms, shotgun and rifle.
19. Explain and demonstrate aspects of range shooting instruction including management of range, coaching, teaching, training and instructing.
20. Evaluate student performance both through written and practice testing.
