HSE 101 - Introduction to Occupational Health and Safety

An introductory course in the occupational health, safety, and environmental principles. Topics include safety programs, regulatory issues, OSHA General Industry Standards and compliance, hazard identification and control, industrial hygiene, ergonomics and other special topics.

Course Learning Outcomes
1. Summarize the relationship of OSHA (PESH) and Workers Compensation in the workplace, private, and public sectors.
2. Utilize OSHA Standards by Section as a reference source for safety and health issues in the workplace.
3. Explain the responsibilities of various government agencies with roles in occupational safety, health, and the environment.
4. Apply reference standards such as the National Fire Protection Association standards and OSHA and EPA regulations to develop solutions to workplace safety and health problems.
5. Interpret a Material Safety Data Sheet and identify the sources of the information it contains.
6. Describe career opportunities in the environment, health, and safety field.
7. Apply concepts of chemical toxicity and industrial hygiene to issues related to occupational health and terrorism.
