Community Forum at MCC to Discuss Stemming Opioid Epidemic in Monroe County (02/22/2019)

Student-organized event to better prepare future first responders in tackling crisis

WHAT: Nearly 600 people died from an opioid overdose in Monroe County from 2016 to 2018, according to the Monroe County Heroin Task Force. To help tackle the opioid crisis, Monroe Community College’s Criminal Justice Club student members will hold a community forum featuring representatives in law enforcement and treatment programs. A recovering addict will share his personal experience to help people struggling with substance abuse.

Attendees, including students in MCC’s criminal justice program pursuing careers in law enforcement and private security, will learn the causes of the opioid epidemic, what community strategies and resources are needed to stem the problem, and the role local community members can play in helping combat the issue.

WHERE: High Falls A&B on the third floor of MCC’s Downtown Campus, 321 State St. in Rochester; parking in lot CC

WHEN: Noon-1 p.m. Monday, Feb. 25

DETAILS: Admittance is free and open to the public. The event will feature Jim VanBrederode, chief of the Gates Police Department; Randy Cimino, president of Gates to Recovery, who will be joined by other representatives of the program; Jim Wesley, retired scientist from the Monroe County Crime Laboratory; and David Attridge, founder of Recovery Now NY and a recovering addict.
