MCC Students Plan Ceremony to Remember Victims of 9/11 Attacks (09/10/2019)

September 11 remembrance ceremonyWHAT: Monroe Community College will hold a September 11 Remembrance Ceremony, featuring remarks by U.S. Army veteran and U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs management and program analyst Jeremy Bagley. He will reflect on his experiences from the 9/11 terror attacks and share his perspective on rekindling the spirit of unity and humanity that arose in the aftermath of the tragedies.

The ceremony memorializes victims of the attacks on the 18th anniversary of 9/11.

WHERE: September 11th Remembrance Walk, outside the PAC Center, on MCC’s Brighton Campus, 1000 E. Henrietta Road; parking is provided in lot G. Inclement weather venue: Stabins Physical Education Complex gymnasium, adjacent to lot G.

WHEN: 8–9 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 11.

DETAILS: Sponsored by the Brighton Campus Student Government Association and the Campus Activities Board, the event is free and open to the public.

Jeremy Bagley served over a decade in the Army with combat experience in Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom. Prior to joining the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs in 2017, he was director of Veterans Services at Nazareth College. He also served as executive director of the Greater Rochester Chapter of the American Red Cross, overseeing disaster relief services for Monroe, Ontario and Livingston counties. In his current role, Jeremy assists national-level leadership in determining where resources and people can best be deployed in service of military veterans and their families. Jeremy is a founding member of the Rochester Gold Star Families Memorial, former vice president of the Rochester Veterans Business Council, and a former member of the Monroe County Veterans Services Committee. An advocate for veterans for 10 years, he has been recognized by members of Congress and New York State Senate through proclamations for his contributions to the community and the nation. Jeremy holds a master's degree from SUNY Empire State College and a bachelor’s from St. John Fisher College.

The September 11 memorial was dedicated in 2002 by MCC student leaders, whose efforts drew the support of other students, administrators and local businesses. The effort to design, build and dedicate a place of remembrance was driven by a desire to create a distinct place for reflection and healing within the community. MCC students annually organize this remembrance ceremony.
