SPA 141 - Spanish for the Health Professions

3 Credits

This course is designed for those in the health professions who wish to acquire the basic tools for effective communication with the Hispanic client. The language is taught in the context of specific situations with extensive practice and a minimal amount of grammar. The course also contains an important cultural component that will allow the student to gain a greater knowledge and understanding of Hispanics, and thus to create a better, safer, and productive environment.

Course Learning Outcomes
1. Orally present intelligible statements or questions in Spanish related to the medical field.
2. Translate statements or questions related to the medical field from Spanish to English.
3. Orally respond in Spanish to statements or questions related to the medical field.
4. Perform a mock interview between a health worker and a physician in Spanish.
