TEK 145 - Career Communications

3 Credits

This course teaches the communication skills needed to succeed in a professional setting. Organizational communication, cultural competence, and management structure will be examined. Students will research areas of ethics, values, and leadership theories within organizational structures and will create their own philosophy statement and portfolio. Students will collaborate with group members to identify mission, vision, and cultural statements, as well as organizational hierarchy, within companies. Students will also identify leadership styles, management structures, and communication strengths and weaknesses through examining select organizations. Students will be exposed to a variety of organizational experts and professionals while enrolled in the course.

1.Explain various ways networking can be used in organizational communication and exploration.
2.Create an appropriate resume.
3.Create an appropriate portfolio.
4.Display proper communication skills in role-play mock interviews as interviewer or interviewee.
5.Summarize readings in ethics, leadership, or values in an organizational setting.
6.Develop a personal ethical perspective through critical examination of codes of ethics.
7.Articulate personal ethics, standards, values or approaches to successful leadership models in an organizational setting.
8.Explain a values based philosophy that includes leadership, team-building or cultural competence within an organization.
9.Describe ethical issues as they relate to organizational stakeholders.
10.Evaluate different styles of organizational management or customer communication.
11.Demonstrate effective teamwork through written or oral activities.
12.Analyze best practices in leadership.
13.Communicate in a professional manner.
