ART 205 - Commercial Illustration I

3 Credits

This course positions the art of illustration as a research-oriented, cross-disciplinary approach to storytelling with conceptual images, emphasizing inquiry, authorship, and critical engagement. Students will explore a full range of current commercial illustration methods and techniques. Students will practice, study and experiment, while expanding boundaries and modes of their own expression. Students are encouraged to create with global awareness, exploring intellectual and creative pursuits to better culture and society. To assist in creative experimentation, there are extensive facilities available to work in a multitude of media: from the analog to the digital, traditional to cutting-edge.

Prerequisite(s): ART 104 or permission of instructor.

Course Learning Outcomes
1.Demonstrate various skills in the use of tools and materials that are common to the field of illustration.
2.Apply appropriate technology (hardware, software, and fabrication tools) to produce illustrative solutions.
3.Demonstrate conceptual thinking through the creation of thumbnails, sketches, and comprehensives that communicate solutions to illustration problems.
4.Synthesize the formal art elements and principles of design with illustration skills and techniques in varying pictorial formats.
5.Analyze and evaluate personal and professional illustration solutions through discussion and critiques.
6.Produce a portfolio that demonstrates the use of concept and creativity.
