ESL 280 - English for Speakers of Other Languages: Medical Interpreting

This course emphasizes language skills needed for effective medical interpreting for non-native speakers of English in the health care system. It provides the student with an overview of key terms; interpreting concepts, practices and protocols; ethical principles; legal issues; and guidance on roles and interventions. Students will participate in group discussions, case study analysis and role plays. It is designed to promote accuracy in reading, writing, listening and speaking in English. Note-taking, memory skills, discourse management and cross cultural communication are emphasized.

Prerequisite of the program and grade of B or higher in ESL 130 or 145, or placement at advanced level on proficiency tests
