TCC Spring Conversation #1: Play and Joy: The Critical Role of Play in Learning, Work, and Research

Back to all events

02/10/2025
Hybrid: Room 12-201 (Brighton Campus) and via Zoom
12:00 pm - 12:50 pm

Attention all serious academics, diligent professionals, and lifelong learners who haven’t built a pillow fort in far too long—this is your official invitation to play.

Professors Jim Downer (methodical, philosophical, likely to quote Piaget un-ironically) and Jason Flack (high-energy, theatrical, likely to throw things) will take the stage for an engaging and slightly chaotic conversation about why play isn’t just fun—it’s essential for creativity, problem-solving, and deep learning. Expect wild anecdotes, questionable metaphors, and maybe even a game or two (don’t worry, no dodgeballs… probably).

Why attend?

  • You want scientific proof that play boosts learning (Downer’s got you).
  • You suspect that meetings would be more productive with LEGO bricks (Flack agrees).
  • You’re curious how Dungeons & Dragons could become part of your curriculum.
  • You secretly hope there will be snacks (there might be snacks).

So step away from the spreadsheets, pause the grading, and come explore why serious work requires serious play. Your inner child (and possibly your actual boss) will thank you.

No RSVP required. Just bring your curiosity—and maybe a foam dart-proof vest.
