Engineering science students are participating in an international and a national competition this summer
Engineering Science students are gearing up this summer to participate in
2019 SUAS international and a
ASEE national
competition.
The 2019 SUAS international competition focuses on autonomous missions that
include Interoperability: the UAS downloads mission details, uploads aircraft
telemetry in real time, and uploads mission deliverables to an external
judge-provided system, Autonomous Flight: the UAS autonomously takes off, flies
within boundaries, navigates a series of waypoints, and lands, Obstacle
Avoidance: the UAS autonomously avoids obstacles, which can be stationary or
moving, Object Detection, Classification, Localization: the UAS takes pictures
of a search area, detect objects of interest, classifies its characteristics,
and provides a GPS position, Air Delivery: The UAS autonomously drops an
unmanned ground vehicle, which carries an 8oz water bottle and delivers it to a
designated location. The competition is held on June 12th to 15th at Webster
Field, St. Inigoes, Maryland of the Naval Air Station (NAS) in Patuxent River,
Maryland. http://www.auvsi-suas.org/co

Owens, Madison Brewer, Justin Payne, Logan Hampton, Brandon Reiner, Yaro Kifor,
Jon Stanley, Joel Freeman (faculty)
The 2019 ASEE national competition focuses on autonomous robot that can
rescue stranded and injured victims of a hurricane (wood peg toys) from random
locations and return them to either the hospital or storm shelter while
avoiding obstacles. Extinguishing a simulated fire caused by down power lines
also earns bonus points. The robots will have a maximum time of 120 seconds in
each of their four allotted trials. The robot must begin within an 8" X 12" X
10" high size limit but may expand to any size during a trial. An Exhibit
Session will precede the robot trials. It is held on June 15th to June 19 at
Tampa, Florida. https://www.asee.org/conferences-and-events/conferences/annual-conference/
