Certification

Students interested in receiving veterans' education benefits must request certification in order for their benefits to be paid out for each semester in which they are enrolled. Certification is accomplished after course registration and certification request forms (form listed below) are completed to ensure that the VA will pay you the appropriate amount of money for the credits that you are taking and to ensure that the courses you are taking are helping you to meet your educational goals at MCC.

Certification is done on an attendance-only basis. This means that VA will only pay benefits during the actual time that students are attending classes. Students are considered full-time by MCC if they are taking 12 or more credits in any given 15 week semester. However, the VA will only pay full-time rates if all 12 of the credits are taken across the entire semester. Thus, if a student is taking 11 credits across the entire semester and one additional credit for only part of the semester, the student will not be paid for full-time status by VA during the time that he/she is only taking 11 credits. Remedial Courses must be be taken "on-campus" in order to be covered by VA benefits. Questions about your VA status for benefits should be referred to the Veteran Services Representative at MCC or to the VA at 1-888-442-4551.

Continued certification is also dependent on academic progress. Satisfactory academic progress for continuation of VA benefits is the achievement of a C average or maintaining a 2.00/4.00 grade point average. When a student falls below 2.00, MCC is required to notify the VA that the student is failing to meet academic standards and the VA may choose to suspend benefits. Students who are having academic problems are encouraged to contact the VA counselor at MCC without delay.

VA Education Benefits Certification Request Form or may at least start the deferment process by:
- Meeting with a Veteran Services Representative
- Calling the Veterans phone line at 585-292-2296
- Emailing a request to veterans@monroecc.edu

Veteran Affairs Pending Payment
In accordance with Title 38 US Code 3679 subsection (e), this school adopts the following additional provisions for any students using U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Post 9/11 G.I. Bill® (Ch. 33) or Vocational Rehabilitation and Employment (Ch. 31) benefits, while payment to the institution is pending from the VA. This school will not:

Prevent nor delay the student’s enrollment;
Assess a late penalty fee to the student;
Require the student to secure alternative or additional funding;
Deny the student access to any resources available to other students who have satisfied their tuition and fee bills to the institution, including but not limited to access to classes, libraries, or other institutional facilities.

However, to qualify for this provision, such students will be required to:

To produce the Certificate of Eligibility/Statement of Benefits/Proof of eligibility preferably before the first day of class. Procurement of a Certificate of Eligibility is required before the next semester's certification.
To provide additional information needed to properly certify the enrollment as described in other institutional policies (ex: SAP).
