MCC’s Optics programs provide hands-on training in optical manufacturing and systems technology, preparing you for immediate entry into a high‑demand, high‑tech industry.

A.A.S.

Optical Systems Technology Associate of Applied Science

This degree program provides training on industry-standard optical systems and advanced manufacturing techniques. You’ll gain practical experience in areas such as system evaluation, electro-optic configuration, precision measurements, and testing - skills that are needed across research, design, manufacturing, quality control, and more. You’ll be well prepared for immediate employment as an optical systems technician or ready to transfer to a four-year bachelor’s degree program.

2 years / 60-63 credit hours

Students typically complete this program in 4 semesters of full-time study.

Whether you’re looking to break into the industry or enhance your current career, this certificate program equips you with the technical skills needed to manufacture, inspect, and test optical components used in products like consumer electronics, eyeglasses, telescopes, and cameras. You’ll gain expertise in areas like manufacturing, testing, and electro-optics, preparing you for roles such as precision optics manufacturing technician, optics technician, and optical assembly technician.

Stack Credentials as You Go

Whether you begin with the Optical Fabrication Essentials microcredential, the Optical Systems Technology certificate, or the A.A.S. degree, you'll have opportunities to build skills and credentials as your goals evolve. Credits earned through the microcredential can be applied toward either the certificate or degree program, and certificate coursework can support continued study toward the associate degree.

Pursue Further Education

Our Optics programs prepare students to join the workforce immediately after graduation, but many transfer to bachelor’s degree programs. Our graduates continue their education at top four-year colleges and universities, including the Rochester Institute of Technology, University of Rochester, and University of Arizona, in fields such as optics, imaging, electronics, physics, mathematics, and computer science. MCC’s Transfer Services Team can work with you to identify transfer opportunities and develop a plan aligned with your career goals.
