Bias-Related Hate Crime Information

NY Education Law 129-a requires all colleges and universities in NY state to have policies and procedures related to campus safety and security. Effective November 13, 2023, amendments to this law add a requirement for disclosing and counting incidents related to bias and hate crimes.

Amendments to Education Law 129-a requires students to be informed that:

The Monroe Community College definition of a hate crime matches New York Penal Law 485 (Section 485.05 Hate Crimes).
Penalties for committing bias-related and hate crimes are listed in the Student Code of Conduct (see: V. Judicial Proceedings, B. Disciplinary Process, 2. Disciplinary Sanctions) and may include arrest and legal charges.
Institutional procedures for addressing bias-related and hate crimes are available in the College’s Annual Security and Fire Safety Report (page 9).
Counseling and Other Resources are available at the College to assist students who have experienced or are experiencing bias-related or hate crime incidents.
Students can report bias-related and hate crime incidents directly to Public Safety (585-292-2911, Brighton Campus Building 21, or Downtown Campus entry desk) or through the Discrimination and Sexual Harassment Form.
Students are advised via email, the Student Tribune, and MCC Alert when the Annual Fire and Security Report is released or when important changes are made to security procedures.

Prevalence of Hate Crimes on campus:

Per the 2023 Annual Fire and Safety Report, no hate crimes were reported for the years 2018, 2019, and 2020, 2021, and 2022.
