DEI in Teaching and Learning Workgroup Update
We are pleased to share an update on the efforts of the DEI in Teaching and Learning Workgroup.
The following faculty and staff members have been meeting since spring 2021 to conceptualize an enhanced curriculum and student learning experience that better reflect the tenets of diversity, equity, and inclusion at the core of our institution’s mission. Central to this work is the identification of pedagogies that align with our DEI goals and the development of new practices that support equitable outcomes for all students.

In addition to submitting numerous recommendations to College leadership in both June and December of 2021, this group partnered with the Teaching and Creativity Center (TCC) to host a July 2021 institute, Frameworks for Racial Equity.
We want to thank all member of the group for their meaningful contributions to this undertaking, particularly Christina Lee who has been coordinating their efforts.
Moving forward, this workgroup will focus on three areas: college systems and strategies, curriculum, and pedagogy. The division of Diversity, Equity, and Belonging and the office of Curriculum and Program Development will continue to lead the first two areas—informed by the workgroup’s recommendations. Dr. Natasha Chen Christensen, Associate Professor of Sociology, will lead conversations on improved pedagogy with academic departments and then convene the full workgroup for further dialogue and action.
This important work would not be progressing without the expertise and commitment from all members.
To get involved in the forthcoming pedagogy discussions, please reach out to Natasha Chen Christensen directly at nchristensen@monroecc.edu. For other questions about the workgroup’s goals and recommendations, you can contact Kimberley Collins, AVP of Academic Services at kcollins@monroecc.edu.
