Mathematics Adjunct and Professor Emeritus William Setek was honored at The College at Brockport Alumni Association’s 2012 Alumni Awards Ceremony on September 15, 2012. The program for the event states:
The Hall of Heritage is the Association’s most prestigious award, designed to honor alumni who have distinguished themselves by their exceptional contributions to the Alumni Association and/or the College and/or the community and/or have shown outstanding professional achievement. William M. Setek, Jr. ‘62/’65 had a prestigious career as a professor and chairman of the department of mathematics for Monroe Community College for a 32-year tenure. He also worked for five years teaching mathematics at R.I. Thomas High School. While at MCC, he was a member of the Faculty Council on the executive committee and was a co-chair of MCC’s United Way campaign. He also served MCC by raising more than $50,000 for the baseball team by organizing an annual baseball card show for 23 years; his efforts were rewarded with a place in the Monroe Community College Sports Hall of Fame. Setek authored two very successful mathematics textbooks, one currently in its 11th edition. He is a well respected professor, friend, and mentor. In 1987, MCC recognized his notable teaching styles and student relationships. He was awarded the Distinguished Professor for Excellence in Teaching Award, the highest teaching honor. Setek has encouraged and inspired many of his own students to pursue a career in teaching mathematics. He serves his community through working with his local church, serving as a member of the Parish Council, lector, and money counter. Setek has continued to support The College at Brockport by regularly donating funds, serving on the Class of ’62 Scholarship Committee, helping select the recipients and encouraging fellow classmates to donate funds, and helping to plan the Class of ‘62’s 50th reunion. Setek received his Bachelor of Science in 1962 and his Master of Science in 1965 from The College at Brockport. He continued his education with a Master of Science in 1966 from Syracuse University.
