Best Practices in Preparing Students for Technical Careers

James Winston, Assistant to the President for Workforce Development, presented yesterday, March 22, at the Regional Tech Prep and CTE Best Practices Conference in Batavia.

Tech Prep (which refers to preparation in technical fields), funded under the federal Carl D. Perkins Career and Technical Education Improvement Act of 2006, is designed to create continuums that link K-12 career and technical education programs with post-secondary technical career programs. This Western New York conference offered those in the field to examine best practices.

James presented on “Tech Career Continuums: K-16 and Beyond.” He used the attached diagram in his explanation of the progressive sets of experiences that build both the interest and competencies of people who are technical. The experiences begin in middle school and lead through post-secondary credentials. James then provided examples for how schools and technical preparatory programs can address the developmental and instructional aspects of the four areas cited in the diagram (exposure, foundational skills, technical competency and advanced credentials).
