Faculty Advisor Tip(s) of the Day: Degree Works Notes and How to Look up an Advisement Key/Alternate Pin
TIP #1: Degree Works Notes
Why take notes?
- Creates a record of student’s advising contacts and advice provided
- Creates institutional memory
- Increases advisor efficiency and effectiveness
- Refreshes advisor memory prior to return visits and helps when planning next steps
- Communicates critical information to other college personnel
- Personalizes the advising experience
Best practices for using Degree Works notes can be found in the advisor handbook: MyMCC, Advisor Essentials, Online Advisor Handbook, Chapter 7: Degree Works
TIP #2: How to Look up an Advisement Key/Alternate Pin
Some of your advisees may require an advisement key/alternate pin to register for their classes. Advisement keys are placed on a student’s account for the following reasons:
- Students in Health professions
- Undeclared – LA01 students
- Students with a GPA below 2.0
- All students with a LAS pathway
- NM17 and LA18 pathways
- AC01 and EP01 program and pathway students
These students are required to connect with an advisor prior to receiving their key. The Degree Works header will indicate if the student requires a key. “Advisement Key Yes” will be displayed. Advisement keys can be found in MyMCC, Banner, B8 Self-Service, Faculty Services, Student Information Menu, View Advisement Key. Make sure you are in the fall 2024 term
Be sure to list the advisement key in your Degree Works notes!
Best practices regarding advisement keys can be found in the advisor handbook: MyMCC, Advisor Essentials, Online Advisor Handbook, Chapter 4: Caseload Management, Advisement Keys
