Story of Chancellor King's Ancestry

The following message from the SUNY Board of Trustees was shared with colleges/universities across the SUNY system on March 2:

Dear Colleagues,

We are pleased to share with you this NBC piece about the journey through which Chancellor King learned of his family’s ancestry. A call in 2019 from the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, a historically black college in rural Maryland, led our Chancellor to uncover the story of his family’s intersection with the horrific institution of slavery. This moving piece is one strong example of how we can have hard discussions about our shared, complex history. We hope you will share this broadly and that it will inspire further, necessary conversation.

‘Incredible Journey': How Former Education Sec. John King Traced Ancestry to a Maryland PlantationNews4’s Jummy Olabanji tells the story of former Education Secretary John King, who searched for information about his ancestors. Only to find out his family roots in this country begin closer to home than he could have imagined.
