Education Faculty Interviewed About New Teacher Mentoring Program

LaToya Manon, Ed.D., assistant professor of education at MCC, was recently interviewed by the Democrat and Chronicle about a new initiative -- the Black, Indigenous, and Persons of Color (BIPOC) Teacher Mentoring Program -- enabling MCC education students to be mentored by early career teachers, primarily from the Rochester City School District.

Scheduled to be launched in the spring 2023 semester, the program will also provide early career teachers with a support network and resources for classroom instruction, as well as co-mentoring skills and opportunities within their schools and with teacher candidates. Mentors make a 10-month commitment to support and encourage their mentees' successful progression through their education program.

All mentoring program participants will attend a series of events, including community suppers, throughout the spring and fall semesters around various topics and speakers. Particular attention will be given to exploring mentoring and co-mentoring models: personal growth, situated learning, core practice and critical transformative approaches.
