Health Care Training Programs Highlighted

An article in the Oct. 27 issue of the Rochester Business Journal includes interviews with MCC program leaders about how integrated learning for students is used in health care training programs to better prepare future health professionals for collaborative practice.

The article quotes Margaret Kaminsky, dean of STEM and Health, and Ayanna Chastine, RN, coordinator of the LPN program at the Downtown Campus. They discussed the importance of collaboration and communication among different health professionals/disciplines as it relates to credit-bearing programs (Nursing (RN), Radiologic Technology, Surgical Technology, Clinical Laboratory Technician, Dental Hygiene/Assisting) on the Brighton Campus and noncredit programs (Home Health Aide, Certified Nurse Assistant, Licensed Practical Nurse) on the Downtown Campus.

Key takeaways:

  • “Nurses don’t work in isolation, radiologic technologists don’t work in isolation … there’s really this whole ecosystem of providers that have to be working together to optimize service and wellness for the patients." -- Margaret Kaminsky
  • “The patient is the most important factor within all of the care that we give. ... Understanding the dynamics of what each person brings to the table to take care of that patient is important.” -- Ayanna Chastine

Keuka College and Nazareth University were also interviewed for the article.
