WHEC-TV and WROC-TV interviewed Endowed Chair and Professor of Optics Dr. Alexis Vogt (Engineering Technologies) regarding educational and career opportunities available in the optics field at the SPIE Optifab Conference that was held in Rochester Oct. 18-21. Organized jointly by the International Society for Optics and Photonics (SPIE) and American Precision Optics Manufacturers Association (APOMA), Optifab is the largest optical manufacturing conference and exhibition held in North America.
Media coverage includes:
- Student Day at Optifab 2021, WROC-TV, Oct. 21.
- MCC leading effort to address a growing national security concern, WHEC-TV Online, Oct. 21
- Congressional Optics and Photonics Caucus to hold first event, discuss workforce development challenges, SPIE* Newsroom (online), Oct. 21.
During the conference, Dr. Vogt also moderated a panel discussion on “Funding and Support to Establish Registered Apprenticeships to Address Critical Workforce Shortages.” National Work-based Learning Coordinator Ross Micali (Engineering Technologies) was a panelist in the discussion that brought together voices from industry and recent hires into the optics workforce who entered through the apprenticeship path. The discussion also addressed the funding and resources available to start an apprenticeship program and how apprentices can solve critical workforce shortage.
We thank Dr. Vogt and Coordinator Micali for their leadership and passion for optics education and apprenticeship programs.
